Minutes of the Meeting of the Dallas Chapter

TEXAS SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

October 14, 2006

The meeting of the Dallas Chapter, SAR, was called to order at 8:30 a.m. in the Mesquite Room at the Embassy Suites, (13131 North Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas) by Chapter President, Tom Smith. Most members had previously processed through the breakfast line.

Chaplain Frank Pounders reported that Compatriot Jim Templin was recovering from hand surgery. Chaplain Pounders also reported that Compatriot Elvin Brown was currently being treated for Cancer and that he was responding well to treatment. The Chaplain then proceeded to give the Invocation for the day.

President Tom Smith circulated a get-well card which would be sent to Compatriot Elvin Brown.

Compatriot John Morton led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag, Compatriot Mark Hansen led the Pledge to the Texas Flag, and Vice President Charles Baker led the Pledge to the SAR Flag. President Tom Smith led the members in the singing of "America."

Past President and Head Greeter Ralph McDowell introduced and thanked our Greeters, Compatriots George Monroe and Grady Fairbairn.

Guests and prospective members attending the meeting were then introduced.

Past President Art Ingalls shared a humorous story with the chapter.

Past President Cliff Slagle presented an Americanism presentation to the membership. He read and discussed “Ben Franklin, the Foundations of the Country”.

President Tom Smith announced that members participating in the State Fair will meet with past Presidents Cliff Slagle and Ralph McDowell after the meeting to review assignments and distribute parking passes.

President Smith shared that the 265^th anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown would occur on during the following week.

President Tom Smith honored Chapter Historian D. A. Sharpe’s for his efforts for awarding four Flag Certificates in Wise county.

District VI Vice President Tom Whitelock reported that a number of prospective SAR members have responed to participants working the Information Table at the State Fair. He thanked participants for their participation.

Second Vice-President Robert Clark reported that the Dallas Chapter will awarded four Bronze Good Citizenship Medals to Sea Scouts.

By motion from Chaplain Frank Pounders and a second from past President Tracey Pounders and Compatriot John Morton, the reading of the Minutes of the previous meeting (as posted by Chapter Secretary, Allen Christian, on the chapter’s website) was waived and approved by voice vote.

Treasurer Byron Christian reported that 34 members and 13 guests were in attendance. He also reported that the chapter’s checking account balance was $1,462.79 the Minuteman Fund had a balance of $8,331.65, and the Richie Fund balance was $27,618.64.

Registrar Jim Templin reported that the chapter currently has 300 members and has 15 pending applications for membership. He reported that the Chapter’s goal of over 300 members had been accomplished.

Registrar Jim Templin installed Compatriots Lewis Eugene Willis and Lewis Eugene Willis Junior into the Dallas Chapter as members. Compatriot’s Willis and Willis’s ancestor was Patriot Robert Willis of the Pennsylvania Militia. Chapter Registrar Jim Templin presented the new Compatriots with membership certificates and lapel rosettes.

President Tom Smith presented Secretary Allen Christian with a Supplemental Ancestor’s Certificate for the service of his ancestor Patriot Claudius Buster of Albemarle Virginia.

First Vice-President Charles Baker announced that the Colorguard will represent the Dallas Chapter on the 11^th of November during the Dallas Parade. He announced that a replica Liberty Bell and a replica Cannon would also be available for the Chapter’s use. He encouraged all members to participate in the parade.

Vice President Baker announced that Dr. James Johnson and his wife will present “Fine Arts of the Revolution” during the November SAR Meeting.

First Vice-President Charles Baker then introduced the speaker for the day. Compatriot John Greer presented “Timothy Murphy, Best Shot of the Revolution”. After the talk, Dr. Baker presented Compatriot Greer with a Certificate of Appreciation and Liberty Bell.

President Tom Smith announced the need of a volunteer to serve as the Dallas Chapter Oration Contest Chairman.

After Treasurer Byron Christian presided over the door prize drawings, the Benediction was given by Chaplain Frank Pounders, followed by the SAR Closing led by President Smith, who adjourned the meeting at 9:40 a.m.
