Dallas Chapter Meeting

August 14, 2004



President Tracy Pounders called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m.

Chaplain Frank Pounders gave the Sick Call: Ralph Wilcox passed away. Compatriot Wilcox's family needs our prayers. Also, remember victims of Hurricane Charley and our service men and women.

Honors were given to the American, Texas, and SAR Flags, led by John Morton, Martin Lyford, and Jack Carney, respectively. FCP Gary Sisson led in the singing of "America."

Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Glen Toal directed the hungry stampede to breakfast.

The meeting reconvened at 8:30.

Guests were introduced, and Art Ingalls educated the group in his own unique way.

Registrar Mel McCoy reported that the current chapter membership stands at 287, with 11 applications in the stream, and 7 supplementals. For this meeting, 38 members and 12 guests were present.

FCP Ralph McDowell presented a Certificate of Appreciation and a bottle of Australian "Thirsty Lizard" Wine to Compatriot Hank C. Goldwire for his faithfulness in providing "Patriot Jelly" as door prize(s) at every August meeting of the Chapter for many years. The jelly is made from mustang grapes that are picked on the 4th of July each year.

North Texas Militia Commander Lt. Col. Charles Baker presented Certificates of Appreciation to Scouter-Compatriot Ken Meaders as follows: (1) To Scout Troop 890 for help with the Lake Highlands Independence Day Parade on July 5; (2) To Andrew Meaders for organizing the Scouts; (3) Specially labeled $2.00 bills for each of the 17 boys who marched in the parade (including 4 banner carriers). He also presented certificates to the following compatriots who paid for the new sashes for the Scouts to wear, identifying each of the 13 colonial flags: Tom Whitelock (DE), Charles Bragg (NJ), James Templin (PA), Robert T. Coursey (CT), Allen Christian (GA) and (NH), Ralph McDowell (MD), Donald Hay (MA), Tom Smith (NY), Mel McCoy (SC), Bert Huls (VA), Cole Youngman (NC), and Graham Martin (RI).

Chapter Historian Jim Templin pled for people to turn in anything pertaining to the history of the chapter.

President Pounders announced that the Dallas Chapter will be greeting army troops at DFW Airport on August 31, Terminal B, Gate 35.

2nd VP Tom Smith read a letter from Dr. Roy Washburn of the Park Cities Rotary Club, thanking the SAR for participating in the Park Cities Independence Day Parade on July 3.

President Pounders awarded the Bronze Chapter Service Medal to Tom Whitelock for his work on the 75th Anniversary Celebration, followed by standing ovation for Tom.

FCP Jack Carney announced the Annual DAR Constitution Week Brunch at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, at the Mesquite Convention Center. He also announced that October will be the month for which we especially urge DAR members to join us.

1st VP Tom Whitelock reported on the Board of Managers meeting in Plano on the first weekend in August. The next meeting will be in Galveston in November. He also announced and presented Mel McCoy and Ralph McDowell with Liberty Medals and certificates for their success in recruiting and sponsoring new SAR members.

Chapter Treasurer Elvin Brown gave the Treasurer's Report:

Cash/Checking: $2,117.40

Minuteman Fund $8,233.98

Ritchie Fund $26,701.94

Treasurer's Report and Secretary's Minutes (as posted on the web) were approved unanimously.

1st VP Tom Whitelock introduced Compatriot Cole Youngman who gave the Americanism Presentation on "What it means to an athlete to represent our country in the Olympics."

Former District VP Ralph McDowell presented FCP Jack Carney the Outstanding Citizenship Award for his work as last year's Chapter President.

1st VP Tom Whitelock introduced Larry Powell, a columnist for the Dallas Morning News as the main speaker. Larry gave an interesting and witty presentation on historical events in Dallas: "History is Personal."

Door prize drawing was held and prizes distributed by Treasurer Elvin Brown.

FCP Art Ingalls led the SAR Closing.

Chaplain Pounders gave the Benediction.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:07 a.m.
