SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
Dallas Chapter Meeting
June 12, 2004

President Tracy Pounders called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m.

In the absence of Chaplain Frank Pounders, Art Ingalls gave the Sick Call: Mrs. Mel McCoy (Judy) is ill and needs our prayers.

Honors were given to the American, Texas, and SAR Flags. FCP Gary Sisson led in the singing of "America."

Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Jim Templin directed the hungry stampede to breakfast.

The meeting reconvened at 8:30, with ASAA Templin introducing the greeters, Rick Fawkes and Robby Keever.

FCP Bob Coker introduced SAR Registrar-General Charles (Chuck) Bragg.

Guests were introduced, and Art Ingalls educated the group in his own unique way.

Pearl Harbor Survivor Paul Ferguson shared his personal recollections of the infamous Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Paul was stationed at nearby Hickam Field at the time. He presented the chapter with a picture of the tattered 48-star "Old Glory" flag flying over Hickam Field with the billowing smoke from the Pearl Harbor attack behind it. This same flag flew over the U.S. Capitol during the official surrender by the Japanese on September 2, 1945. The Annual Flag Day Program at Valley View Shopping Mall will honor the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Paul also told about a wonderful four-course steak dinner that was recently put on for 400 U.S. troops by Pappas Brothers Steak House. The whole event was dreamed up by the General Manager of the steak house, who said that, "It was because they are giving me my freedom, my family, and my country. It was the least that I could do." FCP Cliff Slagle moved that the Dallas Chapter present a Certificate of Appreciation to Pappas Brothers Steak House for this great show of patriotism. Passed.

Chapter Registrar Mel McCoy thanked those present for their prayers and encouragement during Judy's illness. He reported that the current chapter membership stands at 280, with 4 new approvals and other applications in the stream. For this meeting, 34 members and 14 guests were present.

Mel yielded the floor and the induction ceremony to Registrar General Bragg who swore in new Compatriots Robert Keever and Raymond Johnson III, who were respectively sponsored by Jim Templin and Cliff Slagle.

North Texas Militia Commander Lt. Col. Charles Baker showed 13 new sashes containing the names of the 13 original colonies, to be worn by the Boy Scouts during the July 4 parade. He asked for sponsorships for the sashes at $17 each, checks to be given to Chapter Treasurer Elvin Brown. (Brown later reported that he has received checks for 9 of the 13 sashes.)

President Pounders announced the location and cost of the 75th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, July 10, at 6 p.m., at Hackberry Creek Country Club. Checks in the amount of $40 per person must be in by July 3.

Treasurer Brown reported the following balances as of the end of May:

Checking & Cash: $ 3,419.45

Minuteman Fund: $ 8,223.65

Ritchie Fund: $26,351.86

He also announced that FCP Gary Sisson is donating 6 videotapes of his Patrick Henry presentation to the Chapter for sale at $5 each, to raise money for the chapter.

Second VP Tom Smith announced the Annual Constitution Day Brunch on Saturday, September 18, 10 a.m., at the Mesquite Convention Center. Cost will be $20 per person. He also announced that awards have been made to Junior ROTC students in 42 Dallas-area senior high schools, plus Good Citizenship Awards to Richardson ISD junior high school students.

President Tracy Pounders announced that Compatriot Jim Templin has volunteered to be the Chapter Historian, and that Compatriot and Eagle Scout Allan Christian has volunteered to be the Eagle Scout Chairman.

First VP Tom Whitelock announced that the Dallas Chapter has been able to obtain 600 copies of the American Heritage CD for distribution to principals and supervisors attending the Texas Principals and Supervisors Convention. We now have an opening to provide 5000 copies to cover the entire state.

Whitelock introduced Compatriot Michael Peterson who gave the Americanism presentation on the folding of the American Flag and on the Pledge of Allegiance. The Pledge was authored in 1892 by a Baptist minister. Peterson pointed out that the movement to add the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance was started in 1948 by the Chaplain of the Illinois SAR. This was followed by a campaign which reached other state associations of the SAR, the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Congress eventually approved the change in 1954.

With apologies to the main speaker, President Pounders turned the gavel over to VP Tom Whitelock so he could attend an important civic meeting at 10 a.m.

Whitelock then introduced TXSSAR President Roy Adams who spoke on leadership, membership, and forthcoming meetings.

Chuck Bragg spoke briefly on his qualifications as a candidate for President-General of the SAR.

FCP and current District VP McDowell presented a framed collage of "The Battle of Kolache" to Jim Templin in recognition of his arranging for our Color Guard to lead the National PolkaFest Parade in Ennis on May 29, and for his and Helen's hosting a Czech luncheon at their home after the parade.

Jim invited the Color Guard to march again and to enjoy lunch at their home again in 2005.

Ralph also presented new member candidate Cole Youngman with pictures of his participation in the PolkaFest Parade, his first parade as a member of our Color Guard.

Door prizes were distributed by Treasurer Brown.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 a.m.
