Minutes of Regular Meeting of the Dallas Chapter, TXSSAR

SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

The meeting was called to order at 8:05 AM at Crown Plaza Suites-Dallas Park Central (7800 Alpha Road Dallas, Texas) by Chapter President, Jack Carney, who welcomed the 36 attending members and 12 guests. In the absence of Chaplain Frank Pounders, FCP Art Ingalls reported that he was "not aware of any member under the weather or in the box" so he commenced with giving the opening invocation.

Pledges of Allegiance to the United States Flag, the Texas State Flag and salute to the SAR Flag were respectively led by Compatriots: Jud Hughes, Bert Huls and Charles Baker; after which, Tracy Pounders led the attendees in singing America. Acting Sergeant-at-Arms, Cliff Slagle, then proceeded to call the members to the breakfast line.

The regular business meeting resumed at 8:28 AM when Head Greeter for the day, Mark Pacheco introduced Compatriot Richard Fawkes as a fellow greeter. President Carney called for the introduction of guests by announcing a special welcome to Rev. Greg Merkel. This morning's guests were: Henrietta Slagle (DAR), Jim Blake, Judy McCoy (DAR), Sarah Carney (DAR), Montye Whitelock, Dorothy Bruce (DAR), Colleen Coursey (CAR), Angela Coursey, Gary Wende, Mona Neill (DPD), Tom Sible (DPD) & Christian Delesandro (DPD).

Prior to presenting his Americanism program on the Bedford Flag, Chapter Archivist, Tom Whitelock, thanked Dorothy Bruce for donating several historical issues of the SAR Magazine (dating back to 1933) for addition to the Chapter History Library. Compatriot Ingalls then regaled everyone with a humorous story that "Bear'd all."

The Secretary's Minutes (having been distributed and posted on the web site) were approved by a motion and voice vote. The Treasurer's report, on behalf of Tom Smith, was presented by Tracy Pounders. He stated that cash and checking balances totaled $ 3809.74 and that there was no change in the sum ($ 34,523.90) for the Endowment Fund. The report was approved by voice vote.

Historian Rusty Ballard asked for all members with SAR activity photos to please send them to him for inclusion in our 2003 Yearbook. CAR Liaison, Bob Coursey, stated that the David Pendelton Chapter has been very active during the last year and plans are under way to sponsor the Texas Ranger's Museum program, A Legacy of Texas Tradition. He also announced that the Chapter's former President, Andy Anderson, has been accepted at West Point Military Academy.

Chapter Registrar, Mel McCoy, reported that we've had a net gain of one since last meeting for a total membership of 295. He then called forward Judson B. Hughes, Jr., Andrew F. Steele III, and Wayne D. Wende for induction ceremonies into the Chapter. Compatriot McCoy also presented a Supplemental Patriot Certificate to Glenn W. Toal (Valentine Leonard Sr.).

Clark Gray of the North Central Texas Chapter #36 invited the members to participate in the "First Annual Patriot's Wheat Field Dove Hunt" to be held in Wichita Falls on September 6, 2003. Proceeds are to be allocated to the TXSSAR Patriot's Fund.

1st Vice President, Tracy Pounders next introduced Mona Neil (Deputy Chief of the Tactical Divison, Dallas Police Department) who spoke on Dallas' approach to Homeland Security. Her slide show presentation emphasized that the city's finest have been training and operating in a "public safe guarding mode" ever since the 1984 Republican Convention and not just recently because of 9-11. After her informative speech she was presented with the Guest Speaker Cer-tificat and a replica of the Liberty Bell with a closing comment by Tracy reassuring us that "we (Dallas) are in good hands."

FCP Cliff Slagle reminded the members that sign-up sheets were on the registration table today and would be available again next month for volunteering to man the recruitment table at this year's State Fair. FCP Richard Arnold invited the group to join the Color Guard participants at Valley View Mall for the annual Flag Day Ceremonies immediately after the meeting.

The day's "Door Prize" winner was Collen Coursey, and Compatriot Bob Coker led the membership in the SAR Closing. Prior to the meeting's adjournment at 9:31 AM, Art Ingalls gave the Benediction.

Respectfully submitted,

Tom M. Whitelock
