The regularly scheduled meeting of the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Society, Sons of the American Revolution was held on Saturday, October 12, 2002, at Luby's Cafeteria, Dallas, Texas, Chapter President Cliff Slagle presiding.
The meeting was called to order at 7:59 A.M. Chapter Chaplain Frank Pounders gave only the invocation, as there was no sick call. The pledges of allegiance to flags of the United States of America, the State of Texas, and the Sons of the American Revolution were recited. Compatriot Art Ingalls led the Chapter in the singing of "America." The meeting was dismissed to breakfast at 8:10 A.M. and Compatriot Elvin Brown directed the compatriots and guests to breakfast.
At 8:30 A.M. the meeting resumed. Elvin Brown introduced the greeter for the meeting, Chaplain Frank Pounders. Guests attending the meeting were introduced.
Compatriot Ingalls then provided a humorous story for the meeting. Compatriot Smith gave the treasurer's report. The Dallas Chapter has $2,904.79 in its checking account and $34,400.40 in the Chapter's SmithBarney account.
President Slagle announced that the SAR census project has been transferred from a national project to a project for State Societies and local chapters. Also, sheets for recording time spent on veterans' activities were available.
Chapter Historian Tom Whitelock gave his report. Then, the Chapter Secretary Hank Voegtle reported that the Eagle Scout Committee has presented 8 Eagle Scout certificates so far this year at courts of honor and has mailed 194 certificates to Eagle Scouts with invitations to participate in the scholarship program. The chapter's scholarship application is December 15. A list of all Eagle Scout certificates awarded this year was delivered to Historian Whitelock.
Chapter Registrar Mel McCoy announced one new supplemental application had been received.
Compatriot Dick Arnold recognized a Pearl Harbor survivor and awarded Certificates of Appreciation to two radio personalities from radio station KAAM, Mary Hoffmann (who appears on air as Linda Martin) and Hermann Boeckelmann. Compatriot Dr. Charles Baker then recognized Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of Boy Scout Troop 890, Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, other members of the troop and Scoutmaster James Shepherd, for their assistance with the chapter's efforts in the Lake Highlands Fourth of July Parade. Region 6 Vice President Ralph McDowell recognized the other members of the coin album project, Tom Smith and Tom Whitelock. Compatriot McDowell presented the chapter with a check in excess of $520.00 representing the net proceeds from this project. Compatriot McDowell announced that he expected the grocery store affinity program to provide more than $450.00 to the chapter by the end of the year.
Second Vice President Tracy Pounders gave the Americanism presentation.
The speaker, Byron W. Cain, Managing Director of Texas International Tours and Travel, was introduced by Chapter First Vice President Jack Carney. Mr. Cain spoke about international groups in the Dallas Area.
Following Mr. Cain's presentation, the door prizes were drawn by Chapter Treasurer Tom Smith. Dr. Charles Baker announced two upcoming color guard activities, October 19 and November 11.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:38 A.M., following Graham Martin leading the SAR closing and the benediction being given by Chaplain Pounders.
