Minutes of the Dallas Chapter Meeting of August 10, 2002

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Dallas Chapter of the Texas Society, Sons of the American Revolution was held on Saturday, August 10, 2002, at Luby's Cafeteria, Dallas, Texas, Chapter President Cliff Slagle presiding.

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 A.M. sharp. Chapter Chaplain Frank Pounders gave the invocation and sick call. Chaplain Pounders sadly announced that Compatriot Bob Sweatson had died. The pledges of allegiance to flags of the United States of America, the State of Texas, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Immediate Past Chapter President Gary Sisson led the Chapter in the singing of "America." The meeting was dismissed to breakfast at 8:07 A.M.

The meeting resumed at 8:30 A.M. Gary Sisson introduced the greeters for the meeting, Compatriots John Martin, Bob Clark and Rick Folkes. Guests attending the were introduced. Compatriot Alan Pickens introduced special guests from Boy Scout Troop 1010.

Compatriot Harmon Adair, representing the East Fork of the Trinity Chapter spoke on that chapter's efforts to restore the SAR grave marker on the grave of the only Revolutionary War patriot buried in Dallas County. On motion made by Martin Lyford, properly seconded, the chapter voted to support this effort.

Chapter Registrar Mel McCoy announced that the chapter has new dual member, Bertrand Dissetrou. Mel Smith has become a perpetual member. Finally, Compatriot McCoy inducted Carl Smith as new member of the chapter. With the addition of Compatriot Smith the chapter's membership stands at 312.

Compatriot Art Ingalls offered a short, uplifting message, prior to Compatriot Smith giving the treasurer's report. The Dallas Chapter has $2,919.01 in its checking account, $33,291.54 in savings, and $1,245.00 in the Welch Memorial Fund.

Volunteer sign-up sheets were circulated for activities at the State Fair. One sheet was for manning the SAR desk. The other is for giving an Americanism presentation.

Chapter Historian Tom Whitelock reported that Judge Dee Brown Walker had donated numerous documents and memorabilia. This donation includes Judge Walker's SAR membership cards and the chapter's 48 star American flag which was retired when the 50 star flag was adopted. Compatriot Whitlock then gave an Americanism presentation on John Marshall.

The speaker, Jim Gatewood, was introduced by Chapter First Vice President Jack Carney. Mr. Gatewood spoke on the illustrious Dallas County Sheriff, Bill Decker.

John Waterfield reminded the members of the Daughter of the American Revolution Constitution week brunch on September 21 at Brookhaven Country Club.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:33 A.M., following the SAR closing and the benediction being given by Chaplain Pounders.
